The Frankincense essence used comes from the oldest trees in the Omani landscape, where it is harvested during spring and autumn. The resin from the sacred tree, which was valued more than gold in ancient times, is still traditionally extracted by hand.

After the resin is dried into teardrop-shaped stones, the resulting crystals are steam-distilled to extract pure frankincense oil. Frankincense is known for its mystical and calming properties, and when combined with meditation or other spiritual practices, provides inner focus and clarity.

• Baking Soda: Removes dirt, dark spots, evens skin tone, is antibacterial and therefore prevents rashes and skin infections. It is alkaline, anti-fungal, and excellent at balancing pH. In deodorants, it fights odour-causing bacteria and regulates perspiration levels by absorbing excess oil and controlling skin pH.
• Zinc oxide: Treats skin problems such as rosacea and speeds up healing and wound healing. Astringent. Reduces the appearance of open pores. Regulates sebum production. Non-comedogenic, making it an ideal ingredient in creams and sunscreens.
• Magnesium Citrate: renews skin cells. Reduces damage caused by sunlight. Combats skin allergens. Suitable for very sensitive skin. It restores the skin barrier, so it is suitable for dry and damaged skin.
• Frankincense oil from Oman, Grade 1: By using the whole resin full of boswellic acid (not just the essential oil) you get all its positive effects for the skin. Frankincense is an excellent anti-inflammatory ingredient. Frankincense is also known to lighten scars or dark spots on the skin. The scent is woody and earthy.

The Frankincense Natural Park is located in Wadi Dawkah, an important stop on the ancient Frankincense Trail, an incense trading route used by traders for millennia. There are approximately 5 000 incense trees in this desert valley, including several ancient specimens. Although incense trees can reach heights of up to 26 metres, most trees in Wadi Dava are no more than 10 metres tall.

At the age of 8 to 10 years, the incense trees are mature enough to be harvested. In April, when temperatures rise rapidly, the trees can recover from the budding process.

Workers use putty to scrape off the bark of the tree; the exact location and number of cuts on the tree is governed by knowledge that has been passed down through the generations. Resin oozes from the wound and is left on the tree for two to three weeks to harden. 

However, the first harvest is not usable. Soon after the first harvest, the workers repeat the tapping process and the second harvest yields the raw material for the production of incense and essential oils.

The same applies to the third and last harvest of the season. A mature, healthy tree can produce approximately 7 to 9 pounds (3 to 4 kg) of incense annually.

Unfortunately, the number of incense trees has decreased drastically over the years due to overexploitation. The purpose of the Dawkah Wadi Nature Park is twofold: to protect existing trees and to plant new trees to increase the incense tree population in the wadi.
