This is a broad spectrum (covers the full UVB and UVA spectrum, 280-400 nm) sunscreen chemical with peak protection at approximately 310 and 345 nm and is very photostable, unlike older UV filters.

It hardly deteriorates in the presence of UV radiation and is also useful in stabilizing other less stable sunscreen agents such as the well-known UVA protectant avobenzone.

Ethylhexyl triazone is a synthetic sunscreen ingredient that is known for its superior ability to protect the skin from UVB radiation. It is currently available in concentrations up to 5%.

Ethylhexyl triazone provides maximum protection at 314 nm within the UVB spectrum. It must therefore be combined with other sunscreen agents to achieve optimum broad spectrum protection. It helps to increase the photostability of other UV filters.

The water insolubility of ethylhexyl triazone makes it advantageous in water-resistant formulations. On the other hand, it can be difficult to use in water-based formulations; however, chemists have found ways around this by developing unique delivery systems, including encapsulation methods.

Researchers note that the high molecular weight of ethylhexyltriazone (823.07 g mol-1) limits its penetration. That's good, because you want the sunscreen ingredients to stay in the uppermost layers of the skin, where they can best provide a first line of defense against harmful UV rays.

Limiting the penetration of UV filters in this way also reduces the risk of developing a sensitivity reaction.

How much product should I use?

The amount used in studies to determine SPF is 2 milligrams of sunscreen per centimeter of skin (2 mg/cm²). 2 mg/cm² doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a lot more than most people typically use, even though they are instructed to apply it liberally. This is equivalent to 1.25 ml per face (and 35 ml per adult body).

• In the case of this cream, that means you need 2 pumps to achieve SPF 30 for an average face.
• (For a normal work day when you don't sunbathe much, 1 pump may be enough - this will still give you an SPF of around 15).
