What is the meaning of the word Gardenia? It is believed that historically white gardenia flowers symbolized purity, love, loyalty, trust and sophistication - that is why they are often still part of wedding bouquets and are used as decorations on special occasions.

The generic name is said to have been given in honor of the botanist, zoologist and physician, Alexander Garden (1730–1791), who lived in South Carolina and helped develop the classification of the species of gardenia. Gardenia has dark green, glossy leaves and pure white flowers that gradually turn to cream.

The flowers resemble jasmine with their strong, sweet aroma. The fruit is a yellow to yellow-orange-berry egg-shaped type. The aroma of gardenia flowers is known for promoting relaxation and helping people who feel tense to get rid of stress.

In traditional Chinese medicine, gardenia is part of aromatherapy and herbal remedies that are used to treat mood disorders, including depression, anxiety and restlessness. The rare and expensive essential oil of gardenia is obtained using the traditional enfleurage extraction method.

ENFLEURAGE EXTRACTION METHOD

Essential oils obtained by enfleurage are very rare. The most common method used to extract essential oils from plants such as lavender, tea-tree, geranium and hundreds of others is steam distillation. Expression is most often used to extract essential oils from citrus fruits (orange, lemon, grapefruit, etc.). Enfleurage is a very old technique of extracting aromatic oils from plant flowers, which was popularized in France during the 19th century. It works on the simple principle that fats dissolve essential oils and thus absorb their aroma. The petals and other fragrant parts of the plants are soaked in fat or vegetable oil which absorbs the aroma. Enfleurage is used on some flowers because their fragrance compounds cannot be extracted by distillation. Nowadays, most of the essential oils extracted from flowers that are too fine for steam distillation are carried out by solvent (chemical) extraction, but of course the resulting oil cannot be considered organic and there is always a hint of "chemical" aroma inside the oil. Today, very few manufacturers use this old technique because it is very costly, but the excellent results are really worth it.
